Harbin Taiping International Airport experienced a spike in passenger numbers due to the 62-day summer holidays which concluded on Sept 2.
Harbin, in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, is recognized as one of the most popular travel destination in China during the holidays, according to statistical data from China’s travel agencies.
Statistics released by Heilongjiang Airport Group reveal that Harbin airport handled 25,550 flights, and 3.66 million passengers over a 62-day period, representing a year-on-year increase of 8.3 percent and 10.1 percent respectively.
Tourism has been one of the important factors driving the development of Harbin’s airport.
Harbin lies at the same latitude as Montreal. The cool summer in the city makes it a popular place to avoid the summer heat. Harbin was granted the title of “the best summer resort city” during the first China Summer Resort Industry Summit in July; and ranked third in the nation among the most popular summer tourism destinations.
Most of the tourists came from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xiamen, Fuzhou and Shenzhen.
To cope with the peak of passenger flow Harbin airport opened extra security check channels, check-in counters and fast green channels for children, the elderly and the pregnant to shorten waiting times.
