Harbin Summer Music Concert of China, shortly as Harbin Summer Music Festival, is held every other year on Aug. 5 or 6 and lasts a period of 10 days. (Next will be in 2016, 2018, 2020).
It is a national concert festival sponsored by Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and Harbin Municipal Government.
The Festival was originated from Harbin Summer Music Month, then renamed as Harbin Summer Music Concert in August 1958. The first formal Concert was held annually at Harbin Youth Palaceon in August 5, 1961. It was broken off by China Cultural Revolution in 1966 and was recovered from 1979 to 1994 every two years. As a honor to this globally influential Summer Music Concert, Harbin was awarded as "City of Music" by UNESCO on June 22, 2010.
With multiple evenings, concerts, contests and cultural activities, Harbin and its Summer Music Concert brings in many famous musicians, bands and artists from China and all over the world. In 2006 for the "year of Russia" there were various Russian groups in attendance and a concert that featured over 1,000 pianists playing at once.
