Located near Huangshan Mountain, the ancient village of Hongcun has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. According to legend, the village was arranged in the shape of an ox. Leigang Hill, at the head of the village is the ox’s head and the two ancient trees on top of it are considered its horns. The four bridges that cross Jiyin Stream outside of the village are considered to be the ox’s legs, while the interior lakes are considered the internal organs. The mansions in the village are considered some of the best in China. Built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties, the wood and brick of the houses are covered with incredible carvings, with many gilt in gold and silver. Some scenes of the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed in Hongcun Village.
The village can be added to any of Access China Travel's China tours.
